EXCELLENCE IN RESTORATION
583 Parliament St.
Owner: Mike Diles Contractor: Mike Diles

History: Built in 1891, this beautiful Queen Anne house with a typical corner tower, has a long commercial past: butcher, confectioner, etc. Note the Barr's Dairy brass lettering still embedded in the stone step.

Reason for the Award: The building is defined by its asymmetrical design and the whimsical tower. It had most of its original elements but was deteriorating. The building’s brick had been damaged from pollution, wear, and graffiti, Stone elements were cleaned and mouldings repaired. Mr. Diles sees Amelia Street as one of the entrances to Cabbagetown. When he bought the building, his intention was to save it from being purchased by a generic chain.
